Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag first released all the way back in 2013, but it received a new update in July 2023. As far as Assassin's Creed games go, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is often pointed to as one of the best in the entire franchise. It retained the franchise's signature stealth-action gameplay, but also greatly expanded on naval exploration and combat mechanics that were first introduced in Assassin's Creed 3.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag lets players live out their pirate fantasy as Edward Kenway, a character that may not be as popular as Ezio Auditore but is still generally considered one of the franchise's most memorable protagonists. Luckily, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is readily available to play on modern platforms, so anyone feeling nostalgic for it can revisit the Caribbean adventure without having to dig any old consoles out of the closet.

Those that have Assassin's Creed 4 on PC, either through Steam or Ubisoft Connect, may be surprised that the game has a new update to download. As announced by Ubisoft, Assassin's Creed 4 update 1.08 is available for PC gamers to download right now, with the update coming in at a mere 12 MB on Steam and 13 MB on Ubisoft Connect. The update fixes a problem PC gamers have been having with Assassin's Creed 4 launching in windowed mode. It's not an earthshaking update by any stretch of the imagination, but it's reassuring that Ubisoft has decided to address the problem instead of ignoring it, which other companies might do when it comes to a 10-year-old game.

There's also something to be said for the fact that Ubisoft has made an effort to bring almost all main series Assassin's Creed games to modern platforms. Assassin's Creed 4's PS4 and Xbox One versions meant that it has been grandfathered in with PS5 and Xbox Series X, both of which are backward compatible, while some older AC games have gotten remasters. One glaring exception is the original Assassin's Creed, which remains trapped on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Even so, there are plenty of classic Assassin's Creed games readily available to play on modern platforms, with even more in the pipeline. Ubisoft has ambitious plans for Assassin's Creed, with Assassin's Creed Mirage releasing later this year, an Assassin's Creed VR game in the works, an open world Assassin's Creed set in feudal Japan, and more. Rumor has it that Ubisoft is even planning on producing a full-fledged Assassin's Creed 4 remake, though that has yet to be announced in an official capacity.
