When it comes to the Assassin's Creed series, Assassin's Creed 2, Brotherhood, and Black Flag typically find themselves at the top of "Best of" lists. Black Flag earned critical acclaim at the time of its original release for its engaging pirate ship gameplay and gorgeous open world. It remains one of the most popular Assassin's Creed games of all time, but anyone that wants to buy it on Steam is out of luck for now.

Ubisoft confirmed to PC Gamer that is removed Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag from purchase on Steam due to a "technical issue." Some fans incorrectly believed that the game was removed from Steam because Ubisoft was planning on replacing it with a remaster, so this revelation will no doubt be disappointing for anyone that got their hopes up about that possibility. Ubisoft didn't provide a specific date for when Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will be added back to the Steam storefront, but it did say that it is hoping to resolve the issue "as soon as possible."

While Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag being removed from sale on Steam is not an indication that a remaster of the game is in development, there have been some reports indicating that something like that could very well be in the works. According to these rumors, Ubisoft is actually working on a full-blown Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag remake. Before fans get too excited about that possibility, they should note that these rumors remain unsubstantiated, and it's entirely possible that no such project exists.

Whether Assassin's Creed 4 is getting a remake or not, fans can at least play the original game easily on modern hardware. Ubisoft has made Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag readily available on most gaming platforms, with the game even playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X thanks to backward compatibility. Fans can also pick up a Nintendo Switch version of Assassin's Creed 4 if they want to take their pirate adventures on the go, and the game was even available for Stadia when that service was still live.

Assassin's Creed fans also have quite a few brand-new projects to look forward to in the years ahead. Multiple Assassin's Creed projects have been announced and are in active development, with Assassin's Creed Mirage set to launch in early October.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is out now for PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
