Assassin's Creed 3 is nearly a decade old at this point, with the franchise looking completely different than what it did when fans were experiencing Connor's story during the American Revolution. Some fans who were feeling nostalgic for a more old-school Assassin's Creed experience were able to jump on an insane "deal" that GameStop was running in the early hours of the morning, where the retailer was literally giving away copies of Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered for free.

This error was quickly fixed by GameStop, but not before various users were able to claim free copies of Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The site legitimately let users put the Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered copies in their carts, discounted the games by their asking price, and only asked shoppers to pay shipping. It's unclear how many customers were able to take advantage of this "deal" but it received decent attention on Twitter.

For those who may not be familiar, Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered is an enhanced version of the original Assassin's Creed 3, bringing it to modern platforms. It is generally the same Assasssin's Creed 3 game that fans may remember from 2012, but with slightly improved visuals to better take advantage of the newer hardware.

One big selling point for Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered is that it comes with all of the DLC that was released for the original game. This includes The Tyranny of King Washington expansion, which proved to be fairly popular with Assassin's Creed fans back in the day. And on top of that, Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered also includes the HD remaster of Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation as well.

Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation was a handheld Assassin's Creed game that originally released as a PlayStation Vita exclusive. It tells the story of Aveline de Grandpre, the first main character female assassin in the franchise's history, around the same timeframe that the base game of Assassin's Creed 3 takes place. Regardless of one's thoughts on Assassin's Creed 3, there's no denying that the Remastered version offers considerable value, so getting it for free is an absolute steal.

This isn't the first time that GameStop has accidentally made some of its products free. Last year, GameStop made a ton of products on its website available for free, though it was quickly fixed as well. With GameStop focusing more on its digital presence moving forward, it may become better at avoiding awkward situations like this in future.
