After the success of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, the franchise's next step is up in the air. While the latest game has been ported over to next-generation consoles, and even features Graphics and Performance modes, there is no official word on when the next Assassin's Creed title will be launched on the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. According to new reports, players are going to have to wait a while before they get one.

According to YouTuber xj0nathan, it seems Ubisoft will be focusing releases on Assassin's Creed Valhalla during 2021, with two separate single-player expansions for the game coming up. The next Assassin's Creed game will instead be released in 2022 and developed by Bulgarian studio Ubisoft Sofia, according to the YouTuber. Players should take the reports with a grain of salt. YouTuber xj0nathan didn't give much other information in the report aside from the aforementioned bits, which are fairly vague.

Both Assassin's Creed Rogue and Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation were developed by Ubisoft Sofia. While it was the lead studio on those two games, the studio is not one of the lead Ubisoft studios. Ubisoft Sofia was founded in 2006 and has spent most of its time working on handheld games or supporting lead studios. What this means for the upcoming release is unknown right now, but with Assassin's Creed Valhalla opening the door for different sequels, there remains plenty of potential in the franchise.

One bit of information many fans of the Assassin's Creed franchise are clamoring for is the setting of the next game. There have been some dubious rumors pointing to ancient China, however, none of them have been substantial. Assassin's Creed Valhalla seems to set up well for a Fall of Rome style next game. Whether rumor or just ideas that players thought would work, plenty of settings have been suggested for the title after Assassin's Creed Valhalla. These include Japan, Rome, Pre-discovery America, a Western setting, and even Scotland.

Without Ubisoft commenting on these rumors, and no reputable sources reporting information, fans are left wondering what is coming next. Ubisoft generally has a pretty tight-lipped policy when it comes to responding to reports and rumors, usually not commenting when it comes to speculation and unofficial news.

Hopefully, the 2022 title delivers on some things fans want, such as an established assassin to be the main protagonist of the game. While the franchise has still been enjoyable for most, many players are looking for the series to return to its roots, and focus more on the assassins than the other factions in the games. It looks like players can look forward to a couple of expansions for Assassin's Creed Valhalla in 2021, but they will have to wait at least a year to see the next entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise.

Assassin's Creed is reported to have an unknown title scheduled for 2022.
