With fans highly anticipating an announcement by developer FromSoftware at The Game Awards, many expectations have been shattered as the company has announced the development of Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon. A relatively more niche series from the developer, an Armored Core announcement might not be the Elden Ring DLC confirmation that some fans were expecting, but it is still a great surprise for fans.

The announcement of Armored Core 6 came towards the end of The Game Awards, right before the eventual reveal that FromSoftware would once again walk away with the Game of the Year award. Considering that the Armored Core series has had a 10-year break until now, confirmation that a sixth game is finally coming is a huge boon for fans of the classic titles that reach all the way back to the PlayStation One era.

This new reveal trailer opens in classic FromSoftware fashion, with beautiful cinematic shots that don't give away too much of the story going forward with Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon. However, while the trailer doesn't delve too deep into the story, it does show plenty of shots of the impressive mechs that players will be tasked with controlling and destroying at the same time. At the same time, the reveal doesn't exactly show much gameplay outside of the different designs that players might be able to use while playing the next Armored Core title.

The reveal of Armored Core 6 did come towards the end of The Game Awards as well, when many FromSoftware fans may have been expecting to see news on Elden Ring DLC instead. As a result, some fans have already started to comment online about how strange it is to see Armored Core get a new announcement before the title that won Game of the Year shortly after. That being said, many fans of the Armored Core series are still excited to see the otherwise dormant franchise getting a fresh installment in 2023.

While an Armored Core 6 announcement wasn't entirely unpredicted, it is still a surprise that this is the only reveal by developer FromSoftware during The Game Awards this year. Considering the way that Elden Ring DLC has continued to trend online leading up to the award's show, this reveal seems to go against the expectations of fans for the developer. Regardless, news from the Armored Core series is more than welcomed from fans who have hoped to see FromSoftware's more recent successes lead to lesser known franchises get this type of attention in the mainstream.

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is set to release 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
