Highlights

  • Director James Wan believes that the practice of releasing teaser trailers for upcoming trailers is excessive and unnecessary, stating that trailers are already precursors to films.
  • Aquaman is considered a shining light for what DC movies should be, offering a celebration of a superhero who controls fish and an octopus that plays the drums.
  • Fans are concerned that the Aquaman 2 release may be delayed further, and they are not interested in updates about the release of the trailer as it gives away too much of the film before its release.

The Aquaman 2 trailer preview continued a trend that has officially gone a bridge too far for director James Wan.

Many films have doubled down on preempting a trailer with a 15-second spot, announcing that a trailer is imminent. No announcement should be necessary for fans of franchises, especially the Aquaman film series. Trailers are already precursors to films, and adding another promotion before the official trailer drops seems like overkill. Fans aren’t the only ones who believe this.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom director Wan announced on his Instagram that a trailer would drop soon. @MyTimeToShineH on Twitter captured a fan expressing their ire and asking if the director’s post was a trailer for a trailer. “I know, it’s hilarious,” Wan responded.

DC fans have waited 5 years for another solo movie with Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry. Though not everyone was on board with the silly and borderline slapstick comedy, Aquaman 2 is among the few DC movies people are excited about. After the Wonder Woman 1984 debacle and Ezra Miller's controversies effectively ruining the cursed The Flash film, Aquaman is a shining light for what DC movies should be — not gritty and realistic, a celebration of a man who controls fish and an octopus that plays the drums. The only issue is how many times DC delayed the Aquaman sequel.

Now more than ever, Aquaman is needed to make people forget about the world's ills. While the Aquaman 2 release date is still slated for December 2023, fans fear Warner Bros. will delay the sequel further. Even worse is pushing off the release of a trailer by reminding fans that a trailer is on the way. Wan, the master of horror, doesn’t support the entertainment industry's annoying habit.

Enough is enough, and it’s probably time to put a moratorium on extra promotional material for films. Though DC likely intends to hype fans up for Aquaman's new adventure, they have already done that by pushing the release so much. Viewers who are passionate about this installment are well aware of when the film will be coming and have no interest in an update about the release of the Aquaman 2 trailer. Trailers, by design, already give so much away that when going into the film, viewers feel as though they have already seen it. Let’s do everyone a favor and drop a trailer when it drops. Not before.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is slated for release on December 20, 2023.
