Highlights

  • Aquaman 2 received a disappointing initial score of 37% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the worst-rated DCEU movies alongside Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Black Adam.
  • The negative reviews suggest that Aquaman 2 might mark a quiet and unimpressive end to the DCEU cinematic universe, impacting its commercial success.
  • The fate of Aquaman's future in the franchise and Jason Momoa's return as the iconic character depends on the movie's box office performance, which may be worse than The Marvels.

The Aquaman 2 Rotten Tomatoes score has finally been revealed, and it seems DCEU is on its way to ending its journey on a disastrous note.

The first movie in the Aquaman franchise turned out to be a gigantic hit, and Warner Bros. didn’t waste any time announcing the sequel. However, the sequel had difficulties leading up to its release. Aquaman 2 star Amber Heard faced controversy amid the legal case involving ex-husband Johnny Depp, and the film suffered many delays. Even after many issues, the DCEU movie hits theaters on December 22. Although fans are excited about the sequel, early reviews hint that the DCEU might conclude negatively.

According to early reviews, Aquaman 2 didn't seem to impress critics, earning an initial score of 37% on Rotten Tomatoes from 70 reviews at the time of writing. With this initial score, Aquaman 2 has now become one of the worst-rated DCEU movies, nestled between Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (29%) and Black Adam (38%) in terms of reviews. The Aquaman 2 Rotten Tomatoes score makes it the worst-rated DCEU movie of 2023. Earlier this year, Shazam! Fury of the Gods earned a critical rating of 49%, while The Flash ended up having a score of 63%. On the other hand, Blue Beetle turned out to be one of the best-rated movies for the franchise, with a critical rating of 78% on RT.

It's hard to determine how Aquaman 2 will fare on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the sequel would need several more positive reviews to enter the “Fresh” category. Though a few reviewers enjoyed the last DCEU movie, they're in the minority. Most reviews have stated that DC's fading cinematic universe is ending quietly, leaving them unimpressed with the sequel. The Aquaman 2 reviews will undoubtedly affect the film's commercial success.

The first Aquaman movie earned more than $1 billion globally. Warner Bros. has no plans for continuing the DCEU, but the production giant would surely have wanted it to end with a bang. Jason Momoa has made it clear that he would love to play the iconic comic book character again, but that is only possible if people watch Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in large numbers. Unfortunately, Aquaman 2's box office debut could be worse than The Marvels.

It’s yet to be seen if these initial Aquaman 2 reviews will stop the fans from watching the movie in theaters. It’s not a secret that initial negative reviews always hurt the movie in the long run, though the audience score might differ from the Tomatometer rating.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released in theaters on December 22, 2023.
