Severance is one of the wildest shows of 2022 so far. It takes place in seemingly the present day in a town that is experimenting with the idea of separating one’s work and personal life. The Lumon company puts chips in the heads of volunteers who then go to work for a special wing of the company.

Memories between the two versions are never carried over. It seems like a dream but as is always the case in odd dystopian societies, there is a dark side lurking in the shadows. This sci-fi show gets to have a lot of Lost vibes. Season one of Severance left fans with a lot of questions. Maybe there are obvious answers, maybe there aren’t, but hopefully, they will be solved in the future.

There will be spoilers.

7 What Happened To Gemma?

Gemma from Severance

The disappearance of Mark’s wife, Gemma, has to be one of the greatest mysteries of season one of Severance. In the show, it is said that she died in a car accident. It is never mentioned how this goes down. Did Mark get in a crash with her, wake up, and find out from a doctor that there was nothing left of Gemma’s body?

This hospital might have been run by Lumon who, for whatever reason, took the opportunity to kidnap Gemma’s unconscious body and experiment on her with a chip. Based on the final words of season one via Mark, “She’s alive” it’s safe to say Gemma will be a big part of season two.

6 Dr. Reghabi And Graner

Dr. Reghabi from Severance

Petey’s contact on the outside is a mystery as well until Mark finally meets up with Dr. Reghabi. She used to be a surgeon for Lumon until she left. It seems like she ran away and the company has been searching for her ever since.

Together, Mark and Reghabi take out Mr. Graner, leading Mark to get clearance for all the Severance floor of Lumon. Reghabi is never seen again in the show, nor is Mr. Graner. It’s not even one hundred percent positive that Mr. Graner is dead. Reghabi could emerge in season two with a re-programmed version of Graner to fight against Lumon.

5 Mr. Eagan's Goals

James Eagan from Severance

Helly’s past is revealed in the finale, showing that she Lumon family. Her father, James Eagan, is the son of the founder Kier who is mentioned throughout Severance. James meets Helly in the bathroom, saying how sorry he was that her Inny tried to kill her. A normal father may have seen the error in the chips and decided to scrap the project.

If Helly was able to attempt suicide once then why would James assume she wouldn’t try again? The same goes for future candidates. His concern for her near-death experience attempt is either false or illogical, but maybe there is more to it. What is the goal of Lumon overall?

4 Macrodata Refinement’s Job

Mark from Severance

Mark and everyone else in his department have no idea what they do for a living. They each have a computer and sort numbers all day. What these numbers represent is a mystery, although some characters give theories on what’s going on. The numbers could involve killing people or they could be tied to the goats.

That last one was a joke on Helly’s part, who also thought maybe the eggs for the party came from the goats as well. The numbers might not mean anything at all. Either way, this is another question at the top of most fans' minds.

3 How Many More Departments Are There In Lumon?

Burt from Severance

There are three departments shown in Severance, not counting security or anything like that. Mark and the others are part of Macrodata Refinement. Eventually, Irving meets another department via Burt. Burt is in charge of Optics and Design, which does seem to have a purpose. They design the prizes and work utensils along with the art in the hallways.

There is also the one man taking care of the goats. Ms. Casey is in charge of the wellness of the workers and seems a bit like HR at a normal company. That’s about all they show in season one. How many more departments are there?

2 What Was Up With The Waffle Party?

A scene featuring characters from Severance

The waffle party is teased throughout the season. It seems innocent enough. The food is a high ticket reward item for all employees within Lumon. They only get to eat twice a day via a vending machine and those snacks are hardly a meal for eight hours of work.

However, the waffle party is much more than a delicious plate of waffles. There seems to be some sort of romantic angle as well. Were those dancers presented to Dylan actors or were they chipped as well? Also, what would have happened if Dylan stayed?

1 Dylan’s Home Life

Dylan from Severance

There is another question about Dylan that fans might be wondering. Every main Inny character is shown a little bit in their Outy selves. Helly is part of Lumon, Mark is the main character and is thus seen a lot, and then Irving gets to paint. Why Irving paints is a question best left for another time.

What does Dylan do though? He has three kids and presumably a wife but his Outy self is never given a voice. Since he is the only one left out, he could have huge ties to some other characters already shown. Who that could be is the question.

Severance can be streamed on Apply TV+.
