The latest event to come to Apex Legends, War Games, is bringing five completely new Limited-Time Modes, including one with shield regeneration for all Legends and another giving all players a second life. War Games will also come with its own free rewards track that all players can progress to unlock exclusive cosmetic items.

For a lot of the Apex Legends community, the arrival of War Games is not very surprising as it was leaked a month ago around the time the previous Chaos Theory collection event started. Just a few weeks ago, more leaks revealed details of new LTMs that would be coming with the mode.

War Games, which starts on April 13, will be bringing five completely new LTMs over the course of the event’s two-week duration, with each mode staying around for a few days before rotating to the next, much like previous Soiree events and the escalating Ring Fury LTM. The five modes are Second Chance, Ultra Zones, Auto Banners, Killing Time, and Armor Regen.

Each mode appears to be very simple, and they generally have a few small changes to regular Apex Legends play to mix things up. Second Chance gives all players an extra life, so that when they die for the first time, they will respawn with all their gear and will then dive back into the arena. Ultra Zones changes how the normal Hot Zones work in Apex Legends by having three at once in the arena and turning them into Flashpoints – areas that heal Legends that were seen in Season 6’s Aftermarket collection event.

In Auto Banners, players will automatically retrieve their teammates’ Banner Cards and extra Mobile Respawn Beacons will be available on the map. Meanwhile, Killing Time causes the round timer to shorten with each player that dies during the match. Finally, Shield Regen sees Shield Cells gone from the loot pool in favor of passive Shield regeneration for all Legends. As with Chaos Theory’s Ring Fury mode, these LTMs will also be takeover modes, meaning they will replace Apex Legends quickplay for the two-week duration of the War Games event.

While War Games is not a collection event with an heirloom set, it will still have a free rewards track for all players to work through to get some cosmetic items. Apex Legends players can complete event-specific daily challenges to earn points that go towards ranking up the free track. Some Legends, including Pathfinder, Wraith and Lifeline will also have new recolors of classic Iron Crown collection skins.

Given that War Games is not a big collection event, players should temper their expectations for new updates in War Games. While the Chaos Theory collection event introduced a permanent Caustic-themed town to Kings Canyon, and lots of balance updates for Legends and weapons, it is unlikely that War Games will bring meta-changing balance changes at this stage in Season 8.

However, the War Games LTMs all seem to have some simple changes and may instead hint at some upcoming changes in future seasons of Apex Legends. Depending on the player data that developers Respawn gather from the modes, it could be possible for features such as extra Hot Zones, automatically collecting Banner Cards, and a form of passive Shield regeneration could all become permanent fixtures for the game.

Apex Legends is available now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
