Ever since its release, Apex Legends has been going strong as one of the most popular battle royale games on the market. Some say that it is second only to Fortnite itself, and with Legends' Season 5 dropping soon, it shows no signs of slowing down in terms of new content and popularity.

At this point the new character for Season 5, Loba, is fairly well known, and players expect few surprises from her. What is still somewhat in debate however, is what the new weapon will be. Apex Legends has introduced a new weapon for players to try out every season, and while there has not yet been an official reveal, it seems this Season's weapon may have been uncovered early.

One of the big surprises in Apex Legends in Season 5 is the destruction of Skull Town, an integral part of the map that often decided how a match would turn out. The revelation of the new weapon is not quite as big, but it is still surprising: according to dataminers, it seems the new weapon will be the Volt SMG. For those unfamiliar, the Volt SMG was a weapon originally introduced in Titanfall 2, another game from Respawn Entertainment. Details for how the weapon will operate vs. how it operated in Titanfall 2 are not available as of this article, although four skins have already been discovered through datamining.

Besides its aerial acrobatics and awesome giant mechs, the Titanfall series was also known for a slew of unusual primary weapons (such as the infamous Lock-On Pistol), and the Volt SMG was no exception. It fired tracing rounds that could hit enemies in its reticle very, very easily, meaning players almost never needed to aim down sights, and was effective at several ranges. In exchange for this however, it fired distinct blue shots that were easy to trace to the source, so being on the move was very important when using it. For newcomer Loba, who can teleport using a charm, that should not be a problem, and players who take her for a spin will get a lot out of this weapon.

The introduction of new movement flexible characters like Loba, alongside unusual weapons like the Volt and shaking up the map by destroying Skull Town, shows that Apex Legends is willing to shake up the game in big ways to keep things fresh. This kind of change, as well as its underlying fun spin on the battle royale genre, is probably among the reasons why Apex Legends was the most downloaded Free to Play PS4 game last year, and will most likely stick around for the foreseeable future.

As for the Volt itself, many are no doubt hopeful that it will be the first herald of a return for the Titanfall series. However likely (or not) it is that Titanfall 3 will become real, it will likely owe a lot to Apex Legends, both in terms of distinct characters, and multiplayer action.

Apex Legends is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
