While Apex Legends is a first-person shooter battle royale game first and foremost, the game does have plenty of lore and worldbuilding for players to get invested in. In fact, Apex Legends' in-game treasure packs are easy ways for players to get small glimpses of lore during each season of the Apex Games.

Now, Apex Legends is getting yet another piece of extended universe lore in the form of a brand new Dark Horse comic collaboration. The new Apex Legends comic will be a four-issue limited series called Apex Legends: Overtime, releasing on June 2, 2021and will be penned by Titanfall and Titanfall 2 writer Jesse Stern and illustrated with the help of several artists.

The news comes by way of IGN, which received an exclusive first look preview of the Apex Legends: Overtime comic. Of course, the most eye-catching element of the preview is the cover art of the first issue, which sees Mirage and Crypto staring down a simulacrum that could very well be the playable in-game Legend Revenant. The official story teaser given by Dark Horse comics keeps things brief, reading, "In the comic series, the Legends find themselves pulled together to rescue the city from Mad Scientists, brutal assassins, and the sudden and sinister grip of The Syndicate, a corrupt cabal attempting to “fix” arena outcomes in their favor."

While the summary naturally keeps things somewhat vague as to not spoil the story too much, it does mention that the story takes place on Solace, which is the planet where the King's Canyon map is located. However, another very interesting element of the comic reveal is the artists attached to the project, Neil Edwards, Keith Champagne, Antonio Fabela, and Nate Piekos. Edwards has worked on comics for Marvel, DC, and even on the Titan Comics' Assassin's Creed series, and will be the primary illustrator for the comic. Champange, who has similarly worked on DC, Marvel, and even Dark Horse's Stranger Things comic series, will provide inking for the Apex comic series.

Fabela, who has also worked on Marvel and DC comics, will provide colors for the series. Finally, Piekos, who is an award-winning letterer who has worked with several major comic book publishers including Dark Horse comics, will provide the lettering for Apex Legends: Overtime. All in all, the entire team attached to the project is incredibly capable in their own areas of expertise. With Stern attached to the series, who wrote Titanfall as well as Titanfall 2's single-player campaign story, the series will no doubt stay true to Apex Legends' existing lore while expanding the story even further.

The story will undoubtedly introduce some great bits of lore that fans of the battle royale will appreciate. It would not be too surprising if the Apex Legends: Overtime comic series revealed big character mysteries, similarly to how the Pathfinder's Quest lore book revealed what Octane's face looks like under his mask. Fans of Apex Legends can look forward to Apex Legends: Overtime when the comic releases in both digital and print later this summer.

Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.
