Battle royales have been popular in the video game space since the advent of titles like PUBG and Fortnite, especially thanks to mobile ports. Respawn Entertainment got in on the action with its hero-shooter Apex Legends in 2019 which took home Best Multiplayer Game at The Game Awards following high critical reviews and a burst of popularity. Respawn Entertainment has done a great job at fleshing out the lore of Apex Legends characters like Octane, who is often in the spotlight among fans.

The developer's dedication has paid off, with Apex Legends content spreading beyond screens in the form of comics and traditional novels. Set in the same universe as the Titanfall series, Apex Legends provides a complete backstory for each character featured in the game - whether playable or not. Octane, whose real name is Octavio Silva, was introduced to the Apex Legends universe in its first season. Since players got their first glimpses of his character, his arc has been a topic of interest, as Respawn Entertainment continues to reveal the charismatic thrill-seeker's backstory through in-game items and official snippets of lore.

Octane was born into a life of luxury as the son of Silva Pharmaceuticals CEO Eduardo Silva. He's friends with fellow Legend Lifeline, also an elite from the Outlands who grew up on Psamanthe, Olympus. Neither character has an interest in their families' businesses, instead choosing a life of freedom. Octane's quest for liberty led him down a dangerous path, competing in fights to the death as a professional speedster in the Hyper-Fighting Federation. His pampered origins posed no issue, as Octane rose quickly to become one of the elite fighters in the division.

One of Octane's dominant characteristics is his fickleness. The Legend gets easily bored, outgrowing the challenges of the Hyper-Fighting Federation and leaving the underground bloodsport for fame and glory at The Apex Games - eager to test his skills against the best fighters in The Outlands. Octane kept up his form from the underground, but his daredevil nature caused him to lose his legs in a Gauntlet challenge when he used frag grenades to try and set a new record. Instead of retiring from his beloved endeavor, Octane enlists Lifeline's help to craft prosthetic legs.

His disability forced Octane to adapt his play style, and his resourcefulness resulted in him crafting a Jump Pad to launch through the air. Additionally, the Legend combined a portable dialysis machine and stim to increase his speed, arguably now a better fighter than before his injury. Further revelations tell the story of Octane's motivations and complex personality. Octavio shared a distant relationship with his father, even coming to blows with his old man in the Apex Legends Season 9 quest "The Legacy Antigen."

Despite the colder-than-ice relationship, Octane harbors guilt from his father's death - which happened during one of his speedster competitions. The incident drives Octane to strive for glory at the Apex Games, and his rivalry with fellow speedster and distinguished thief Loba adds fuel to the fire. Octane's daring nature and unique play style will always make him a hot topic for Apex Legends players, and fans look forward to more revelations from Respawn Entertainment in the future.

Apex Legends is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
