Highlights

  • Apex Legends and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth are collaborating for the biggest crossover in the battle royale game's history, creating excitement for fans of both franchises.
  • This collaboration is not Apex Legends' first crossover, as the game has incorporated elements from other franchises in the past.
  • Still, the partnership between Apex Legends and Final Fantasy could pave the way for more exciting collaborations and surprises in the future, potentially continuing the game's upward trajectory.

While the 2023 Game Awards offered a plethora of information, a single announcement involving Apex Legends and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is garnering quite a bit of attention. It's no secret that fans of Square Enix's JRPG franchise are eagerly awaiting Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's arrival, which is currently slated for February 2024. However, few could have anticipated the January 9 crossover between Final Fantasy and Apex Legends.

Since it was only recently revealed that Apex Legends is crossing over with Final Fantasy 7, details remain scarce. As 2024 draws nearer, it's expected that more information will be divulged. Regardless, whether one is a fan of Final Fantasy or Apex Legends, this collaboration has the potential to be incredibly special for everyone involved, seeing as it's the biggest crossover in the game's history.

Apex Legends Has Had Themed Events In The Past

Apex Legends Gaiden Event Skins

It should be noted that Apex Legends has participated in limited-time events before. After all, the 2022 Apex Legends Gaiden event was very popular when it debuted its anime-themed cosmetics and game modes. While the Gaiden event was visually appealing and attracted many players, it's important to note that it wasn't an official crossover. This means that the event's cosmetics, though heavily inspired by anime characters, couldn't be directly associated with them. For example, Bangalore's Epic Soldier of Justice skin can only be stated as loosely based on Sailor Moon, whereas Crypto's Epic Strength and Power skin is merely a reference to Goku from Dragon Ball.

Interestingly, this isn't the first time Apex Legends has incorporated elements from other franchises without engaging in an official partnership. This includes, but isn't limited to:

  • 2019 - Pathfinder's "BP-1" skin references BD-1 from Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
  • 2020 - Wattson's Legendary Lightning Spirit skin references Naruto
  • 2022 - Seer's Legendary Envious Attitude skin references the Green Ranger from Power Rangers
  • 2022 - Horizon's Legendary Atom Heart Mother skin references Gipsy Danger from Pacific Rim

Apex Legends has also had official crossovers. The Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth collaboration will not be its first.

Apex Legends' Partnership With Final Fantasy Could Be A Sign of Things to Come

Based on the footage from The Game Awards, there will be at least three new skins to behold. This includes Crypto as Cloud Strife, Horizon as Aerith Gainsborough, and Wraith as Vincent Valentine. Aside from these cosmetics, fans have been speculating that weaponry from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be usable in Apex Legends. This theory is based on the fact that Cloud's Buster Sword is shown being lifted by Crypto in the trailer. This scene, coupled with Crypto performing Cloud's "Braver" Limit Break, has sparked quite a bit of excitement about the possibility of the famed sword becoming a limited-time weapon.

This includes Crypto as Cloud Strife, Horizon as Aerith Gainsborough, and Wraith as Vincent Valentine.

Transcending simple nods to other IPs, this crossover should pave the way for more exciting collaborations in Apex Legends. Following on the heels of the Post Malone x Apex Legends event in November, this may be an ideal way for Respawn Entertainment to continue the battle royale's upward trajectory. Considering that there were no leaks before the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth collaboration, it seems anything is possible. As such, only time will tell what captivating surprises await Apex Legends in the seasons to come.
