Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania reviews surprised Marvel Studios because they thought they had a good film, and most audiences believed otherwise.

Since Avengers: Endgame came out, MCU films have not felt the same. Films like Eternals, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Ant-Man 3 have not been received well by critics or fans. Films like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 gave fans hope that Marvel Studios can still produce good content. The hope that came after the release of Vol. 3 was short-lived because Secret Invasion dashed all expectations. Now fans are learning that Marvel Studios genuinely thought that at least one of these projects was good.

While The Marvels is an exciting prospect for Brie Larson's Captain Marvel, the fans might not be as inclined to show up for the movie.

On the latest episode of The Watch podcast, Joanna Robinson, author of the tell-all book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, revealed that the executives at Marvel Studios were surprised when Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania received negative reviews. “Quantumania really shook them because they felt like they had something good. Because they all internally thought, 'Everyone's gonna love this,'” Robinson said. “And then they put it out and people didn't. And then they were like, 'Oh no, our internal barometer is not attuned to what people want anymore.' With Quantumania, they were like, 'We put out a banger.' And then that's not how a lot of people felt."

These negative reviews, including Ant-Man 3, were a wake-up call for Marvel Studios, as they no longer know what audiences want. This has caused them to make major adjustments to their projects. Recently, Marvel Studios fired the Daredevil: Born Again writers and directors after they watched what had already been filmed and did not like what they saw. Now Marvel Studios is changing how they produce their shows, opting for a format similar to traditional network TV, with multiple seasons as opposed to their 6-9 episode events.

Many fans will be glad to hear Marvel Studios is realizing they are going in the wrong direction from these negative reviews and is at least trying to improve their streaming series. Marvel Studios has yet to reveal plans to change how they make movies to fix their recent lackluster performances, but there are rumors that they will reboot the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars. A reboot could renew fan interest in the characters and the shared universe, but it does not guarantee improved quality.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is available on Disney Plus.
