Depending upon the success of the game and the dedication of the players, independent studios may release a DLC for their game.

However, to gamers’ delight, many successful indie games also receive an entirely new game sequel (or prequel) to join the lineup of their favorite titles. Many sequels are being teased and released, allowing players to look forward to their favorite games being continued.

8 Oxenfree 2: LOST SIGNALS

Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals, released July 12, 2023, by developers Night School Studio, is the sequel to Oxenfree, a supernatural thriller that has players dealing with rifts in time and relationships. The unique intelligent conversation system, radio mechanic, and 1980s teen horror has been widely loved and highly reviewed. Oxenfree 2 follows the events of the first game five years after the ending.

Players return to the hometown of Camena to investigate eerie radio signals and disturbances that will leave players with a thrilling sense of deja-vu. The new game also boasts new conversation mechanics through a walkie-talkie system, alongside the same specter-radio and high-stakes character decisions players loved from the original Oxenfree.

7 Hollow Knight: Silksong

From the developers of Hollow Knight, Team Cherry has released teasers for their sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, which follows Hornet, a character integral to the premiere game. In this action platformer, players will explore a new kingdom while mastering Hornet’s skillset after Hornet has been captured and brought to a strange new world.

Players can still enjoy the challenging foes and platform mechanics while also engaging with new enemies, environments, and game modes such as Silk Soul mode. The release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong has yet to be announced by Team Cherry.

6 Sea Of Stars

For fans of The Messenger by Sabotoge Studio, Sea Of Stars comes out in August 2023 as a prequel to the pixel platformer as the second game’s events take place thousands of years before The Messenger and with an all-new turn-based RPG system. With the interesting twist in game styles, players can still be sure to find compelling storytelling, action, and high stakes in a new format.

Sea Of Stars follows two heroes, Valere and Zale, who wield sun and moon powers in order to fight an evil alchemist and his grotesque creations. Players can combine these powers to perform Eclipse Magic in order to take on the powerful Fleshmancer. The sequel also highlights a musical score by Eric W. Brown and Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda.

5 Cat Quest: Pirates Of The Purribean

The third installment in The Gentlebros’ Cat Quest franchise, Cat Quest: Pirates Of The Purribean has gamers playing as a purrivateer in this pirate-themed open-world action RPG. Players will be able to swashbuckle and sail their own ship in order to fend off Pi-rats, who serve the Pirate King.

The upcoming game still features the known character build customization as featured in the previous two installments, now with a refined combat system, tighter attack combos, and weapon swapping. Players will sail the high seas, find loot, battle enemies and more in this game slated for 2024.

4 Haunted Chocolatier

From the developer of the widely known Stardew Valley, ConcernedApe has released teasers for the sister game Haunted Chocolatier. While ConcernedApe has not revealed much in terms of the world, or its exact relation to Stardew Valley, teasers and screenshots released from development feature a lot of the same beloved characteristics that drew in dedicated fans, plus some familiar-looking slime creatures.

In Haunted Chocolatier, the players arrive in a new simulation RPG where they become a chocolatier living in a haunted castle. Players must gather ingredients, fraternize with the locals, and make chocolate to progress throughout the game. ConcernedApe has yet to release any announcement for the release of this game.

3 Hades 2

Supergiant Games is releasing their first sequel for the hit award-winning game Hades, a god-like rogue-like Greek mythology action game. The sequel will feature a new heroic main character and a set of fully-voiced NPCs, some familiar and plenty that are new. The new game also features a deeper exploration of the mythical world and uncovers the unique storyline that comes with playing as the Immortal Princess of the Underworld.

Hades 2 will still feature the same dungeon-crawling, action-packed, and endlessly replayable game style fans are waiting for. At the moment, Supergiant Games has not released any announcement for the release of this game.

2 Humans Fall Flat 2

As a sequel to the original clumsy platformer, Humans Fall Flat 2 from No Brakes Games promises an even clumsier experience with their second installment. Humans Fall Flat, released in 2016, is a light-hearted solo-or-coop physics-based platformer with a variety of different levels that have players testing their creativity and wit in order to make it to the finish line.

Each level features new landscapes and environmental challenges to navigate in order to solve the various puzzles needed to be completed before continuing. While the sequel is set to preserve the same silly dynamics fans love, No Brakes Games teases a new physics engine, gameplay interactions, and new mechanics that will take the original game to the next slapstick level. The developer has not currently released any information on the release date of this game.

From the developers of Reus, Abbey Games brings Reus 2, which puts the player in control of enormous giants that can shape the world for humans to inhabit, grow, and engage in war. The player’s choices will directly impact the fate of humanity on the planet as they try to thrive under the conditions the giant has given them.

Reus 2 offers the opportunity for players to strategize and experiment with different combinations of elements that will either help the population flourish or fail. The choices the players make early on will have lasting effects as humanity evolves past primeval settlements into advanced civilizations, and it is up to the player to help the people advance or just completely start over.
