Nintendo's phenomenal success continues, as Animal Crossing: New Horizons not only becomes the highest selling game of March 2020, but also one of the fastest-selling Nintendo games of all time.

The recent NPD reports have been posted and Nintendo's social simulation, collection, and world-building game has dominated the month. Animal Crossing: New Horizons outsold the likes of Doom Eternal and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Nintendo does not track its games digitally, which makes the fact that New Horizons was the highest selling game of March that more impressive, as it also the second-highest selling game of the year so far.

Perhaps most impressive of all, New Horizons is now the third fastest-selling Nintendo game of all time. Super Smash Bros Ultimate. became the fastest-selling Nintendo game when it launched on the Switch in 2018. And the series' counterpart, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, on the Wii is the second fastest-selling game for Nintendo.

The fact that the Super Smash Bros. series has had such success isn't surprising, as the fan-favorite series always gets swallowed up the moment players get the opportunity to buy it. Additionally, the Wii was such a successful console, and Switch has been a massive triumph as well. Many players jumped at the opportunity to purchase Super Smash Bros. on those consoles.

The idea that New Horizons, which could be the total antithesis of a fighting game (although Villager and Isabelle are in Super mash Bros.), is now right beside Super Smash Bros. as the fastest-selling Nintendo game is wonderful and a testament to Nintendo's reach.

Nintendo continues to support the game, as new events have just been revealed for Animal Crossing: New Horizons for May through June. The ongoing support for the game may be why fans have put so much time into the game, and why launch month dollar sales for New Horizons have exceeded the lifetime sales of all other Animal Crossing franchise titles.

Nintendo still has tons of secret features on the way for New Horizons, and the content will be aplenty for players of the game moving forward. There has always been a group of Nintendo fans who adore the franchise, but now it seems that a new group of players has jumped on board. Animal Crossing quickly went from a cult-classic type series to one of Nintendo's biggest franchises, and the numbers prove it.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
