Animal Crossing: New Horizons has added a plethora of new features to the franchise, but going to different deserted islands is often among the most lucrative. Whether to find money rocks or to get rich off tarantulas, players will spend their hard-earned Nook Miles in order to possibly find a rare island. Recently, a rumor suggesting that the player can control the type of island they get started going around on social media. However, after being tried out, it appears that "the airport trick" doesn't actually work.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons players know how difficult it is to find a rare island, and this trick claimed to fix all of that. Allegedly, if the player meets a specific requirement—such as making Orville blush or carrying a certain tool—they will go to a specific kind of island, rather than a random one. But, a recent Polygon article documented how the writer tested the trick out and determined that it isn't real, saying:

...here’s what I can say based on some testing. I tried the trick on three days in a row, for a total of eight times, and I only got a special island once — money rock island. All other times, I either got a standard island with my native fruit and some rocks, or something actively bad, like trash island.

This means that, as far as anyone knows, there is no way to trigger a specific kind of island. In order to find a rare island, players still must buy a Nook Miles ticket and hope that they get one at random.

This is unfortunate news for players who were hoping to find a rare island more easily. Certain things, such as bamboo plants, flowers with uncommon colors, and money rocks can be found on rarer islands—and incentives like these encourage players to buy Nook Miles tickets. But there are bad things as well as good things players can get from islands, and players will get average or worse islands more often than not. If it was true, this trick would have given players a bit more control over which islands they get.

Since Animal Crossing often includes features without outright telling the player, it makes sense that fans would believe that this trick would work. For many players, the ability to have a little more control over the island they get would be greatly appreciated. But while it would make getting things such as rare flowers or money rocks easier, it could also trivialize them because it would be easier to get them. It's difficult to say whether or not this feature, if it was actually included, would even be for the best.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
