Animal Crossing games have always provided players with a large variety of activities and things to enjoy, with customization being just one of them. For many players, their villagers also keep them coming back to the game, and being able to impact how an Animal Crossing: New Horizons villager's home or personal attire looks are just a couple of ways to make the game more personal and interesting.

However, one thing that many players likely overlooked is the ability to impact what kind of tools their villagers carry around. Now it's come to light that with a quick conversation, players can get their villagers to carry unique tools.

This particular discovery was uncovered and shared by YouTube channel Crossing Channel, which uploaded a video demonstrating it. Players of Animal Crossing: New Horizons will likely know that nearly all tools have different versions available, whether it's due to the type of material they're made out of or simply being given a different look, like the star-shaped bug catching net. As it turns out, players can get their villagers to change which type of tool they carry by simply giving them a new one.

It turns out that animal villagers will equip whichever version of the tool is gifted to them by the player. The mechanic works similarly to giving an animal villager a new piece of clothing or a decoration for their home, as villagers can also wear or decorate with those, accordingly. While gifting a new version of a tool has no impact on gameplay, it's just one more way that players can tweak everything on their island to be exactly the way that they want it.

Sadly, the gifting of new tools underscores the fact that animal villagers can't actually do anything with said tools. Avid players have surely seen their townsfolk waving nets around at bugs or fishing for tuna on the player's island, but they never actually make a successful catch. However, since these idle animations exist and are regularly used, it's nice that players can at least change how they look.

Despite the game's increasing age, players are still making discoveries like these in Animal Crossing: New Horizons all the time. Seemingly insignificant things like the typewriter in New Horizons have hidden details that the average player might not ever even see. While some players lamented that certain things from Animal Crossing: New Leaf were missing in New Horizons, it's obvious that a lot of work and creative thought went into bringing the Switch iteration of Animal Crossing to the world.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now for Nintendo Switch.
