It can definitely be said with confidence that Animal Crossing: New Horizons brought joy to the generation of teenagers and young adults stuck inside their homes during the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic. Animal Crossing: New Horizons was released in March 2020 and was an instant hit despite being the first Animal Crossing game to be released in almost eight years.

With the global situation happening at the time of the game's release and its instant popularity, Animal Crossing: New Horizons became an unavoidable topic on social media. Fans of the game were making videos showing off their intricate islands, as well as a plethora of memes about the silliness of the villagers on their island.

8 The Frustration Of Fake Paintings

Arguably one of the most difficult galleries to complete in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the art gallery. While bugs and fish can be caught at different times of the year, players who wish to "catch 'em all" without waiting for the seasons to progress can easily change their game clock and "time travel" to the season where that critter or fish is available.

However, the art gallery is different. Art is primarily obtained through visiting Redd's ship on the days he visits the player's island. The catch is that Redd often tries to sell the player fake paintings, which won't be accepted into the art gallery. So if the player purchases one of the fakes, they're out of luck until Redd comes back another day. Even though players spend a good few minutes studying each painting, sometimes they frustratingly choose the fake and have to face Blathers breaking that fact to them.

7 Duck Villagers

Some villagers have...questionable designs, to say the least, but each and every villager in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is loved by their own group of fans. The duck villagers, especially, have their own niche of players who enjoy their goofy designs and odd posture.

This tweet both charms players into wanting their own duck villager and makes them laugh about the goofiness of their stance. Many of the duck villagers have a wide-eyed look, making them appear surprised or slightly dorky. If any parents out there play Animal Crossing, they know better than anyone that look that comes from a child informing them that they've gotten sick, something similar to the look of the duck villagers.

6 Barging In

Villagers have the funniest reactions to actions players can perform around them. Whether that be hitting them with nets, catching bugs or fish, and even emoting or dancing, each of them will react with their facial expressions or actions.

Merry, especially, seems to be rather expressive. When this player barged into her new home while she was unpacking and cleaning only to start happily dancing, Merry gives them the sassiest side-eye in the history of video game expressions. Ouch, Merry, all they wanted to do was celebrate your arrival!

5 Villagers' Horrific Fashion Taste

It's always fun to receive gifts from villagers, as most of the time they can be useful or stylish. Sometimes villagers will gift pieces of clothing that the player hadn't seen before, not even in the Able Sisters clothing shop. That said, villagers aren't exactly known for their stellar fashion taste.

Oftentimes they gift clothing that is the tackiest, ugliest piece of clothing that players have ever laid eyes on. Although it's sweet, many players will scurry off to Nook's Cranny after the villagers' back is turned to sell the ugly clothing item.

4 My Favorite Villager Is Moving Out, Oh No!

Every player has been there, they log on and see the white bubble above their favorite villager's head only to interact with them and realize that they're trying to move off the island. It's heartbreaking, to say the least, but unlike many other Animal Crossing games, villagers can't move off the player's island unless they give them permission to.

This meme showcases that funny in-game mechanic, telling players everywhere that their favorite villager can't move off the island unless you consent for them to do so, which is absolutely true even in-game.

3 Villager Cannibalism

Of all the cat villagers, one of the most beloved must be Tangy. Tangy is an orange cat, designed after the citrus fruit and named after its sharp, often tangy, flavor. Her appearance is unique and well-loved, as well as her peppy personality which makes her a delight to have on player's islands.

That said, who knew Tangy was also a cannibal? This meme showcases the innocent cat enjoying a nice glass of orange juice, only realizing she'd been drinking the very juice of the fruit she's based on after looking closer at her glass.

Sometimes those connections run for years, seeing as some players searched for a particular villager they had become close with in the original Animal Crossing as well as Animal Crossing: Wild World.

Calling these villagers something akin to the love of parents towards their children is nothing unusual, in fact, it may be more universally accepted to have a connection with a particular villager than it is to not have one.
