The game developers made sure to acknowledge the gamers' birthdays in the game by adding a congratulatory dialogue. Unfortunately, people born on February 29th do not always get congratulations in games or apps on their birthday unless it is a leap year. Because leap day birthdays are usually overlooked, details such as the one in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are greatly appreciated by users.
This Nintendo game has been known for adding unique dialogues for special occasions and for paying attention to small details which have made fans appreciate Animal Crossing even more. For instance, players who have birthdays on Christmas have also reported that their birthdays were acknowledged instead of being ignored because of the holidays.
Moreover, characters in Animal Crossing tend to have content related to holidays and other special events, and birthdays are no exception. Villagers usually gather to throw a party for the player's birthday where they celebrate by dancing and giving them gifts. Every character also congratulates the player with a dialogue that matches the villager's personality. This time, Reddit user AFanOfStickers posted a still showing Butch saying they were celebrating the player's birthday in advance since it is not a leap year.
Another Animal Crossing character, Olaf, also had a dialogue for the occasion. Olaf was reported asking players who have birthdays on February 29 if they only celebrate their birthdays every four years and telling them they should receive four times as many presents.
Animal Crossing fans seemed appreciative of these types of details which make the game feel more personalized. Leap day is also acknowledged on other installments like Animal Crossing: New Leaf which actually features Luna, a tapir whose birthday is on February 29th. Additionally, the mobile version of the game, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp also congratulated players who celebrate their birthdays on leap day.
Since Animal Crossing: New Horizons was released in March of 2020 which was a leap year, players have not been able to discover if characters have the usual dialogue on leap day birthdays. Since the next leap year will be in 2024, fans with leap day birthdays will probably get to experience the newly discovered leap day dialogues for the upcoming three years and will have to wait for the next leap year to find out if there is another unique dialogue next February 29.
