Returning in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the rating system for players' towns and islands. Reaching a perfect five stars is a goal that many players aspire to achieve, with some players not knowing how to get that far.

Island Evaluations are unlocked shortly after Tom Nook tells players about his plan to get K.K. Slider to visit the island. The first evaluation goal is to reach three stars and after it is complete, K.K. Slider will stop by the next day.

Players initially weren't sure about how to get the five-star rating, as it seemed to follow different credentials to the three-star rating. However, after Animal Crossing: New Horizons dataminer Ninji went through the games files, the exact specifics for an island rating were discovered. The two scoring systems are labeled as "Nature" and "Life".

Nature

Animal Crossing New Horizons Utena

While there is no available description, the nature score most likely is referring to the amount of plant life and naturalistic aspects of the player's island. Aspects such as planted flowers and trees as well as more naturalistic furniture placed could contribute to this score.

As the game encourages weeding, having more weeds most likely doesn't improve this score. Players should probably continue to weed their islands and use the materials as selling fodder or crafting materials.

Players can get more trees by planting fruit or by buying tree saplings from Nook's Cranny. For players wanting to have more variety in their fruits, players can go to the random islands that can be accessed via Nook Miles tickets or by visiting friends with different fruits. Selling fruits not native to players' islands gets more bells overall.

Life

Animal Crossing New Horizons Vending Machines

The life score most likely refers to the furniture placed around the island that helps out with day to day island life. Many of these furniture items can be purchased from the Nook Stop via Nook Miles as an item that comes in the mail or a DIY recipe. Items such as a lighthouse or a manhole cover help the island modernize and aids with convenience.

Another factor that could contribute to the score is the total number of villagers residing on the island. After all, an active community is a good community. Players also should focus on befriending villagers and not trying to scare them off the island because of their looks.
