Highlights

  • Animal Crossing has a wide variety of villagers, with dogs and cats being the most common and octopi being the least common.
  • Some of the villagers, like Limberg the Cranky Mouse and Beardo the Smug Bear, have less appealing features that make them more alienating.
  • Rodney the Smug Hamster and Diva the Sisterly Frog have also received negative attention for their appearance and personality.

Nintendo's Animal Crossing franchise has become well-known for its cast of villagers since 2001. In the series, anthropomorphic residents make their homes in a player's town, bringing with them their own unique interests. However, Animal Crossing villager tier lists have revealed some clear favorites, alongside which ones are harder to love.

Though there are 413 villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, there are about 460 in the franchise. The majority of these characters are dogs and cats, with the fewest being octopi. Unfortunately, among the many NPCs in Animal Crossing, there are some less-than-desirable ones with distasteful features or personalities.

Limberg the Cranky Mouse

Limberg the Mouse

The mice category of Animal Crossing currently has twenty villagers in it, but several are not easy on the eyes. Limberg is one of the few mice to be involved in every game, which is unlucky for those who don't like his clown-like features. He has a distinct five o'clock shadow and down-turned eyebrows that make him appear unapproachable. On top of this, his grouchy personality can make him difficult to get along with. Nonetheless, honorable mentions for cursed mice go to Anicotti, Chico, Moose, and Rizzo.

Beardo the Smug Bear

Beardo from Animal Crossing

Beardo in Animal Crossing is a smug turquoise bear that appears well-kept. His beady eyes appear cute, but the brown mutton chops on either side of his face are disconcerting. The top half of his face conveys wholesomeness, but the lower half immediately contradicts this. Though he isn't the most ugly villager, he isn't very charming either.

Rodney the Smug Hamster

Rodney from Animal Crossing

Rodney the hamster was at one point given the title of "most hated villager in all of Animal Crossing: New Horizons", which is a profound achievement. In 2020, the abhorrence for the teal hamster resulted in a spiteful Reddit community that currently consists of thousands of users. While the animal's decorative taste has gotten a pass from some, his droopy eyes and smug personality are reason enough to make crowds turn on him. Aside from his strangely symmetrical freckles, the random patch of pink hair on his head isn't helping his case.

Diva the Sisterly Frog

Diva from Animal Crossing

Diva the frog has an Egyptian-inspired design, but for some people, it just doesn't click. The dark eyeliner around her pointed lashes is rather haunting. While some Animal Crossing villagers can be sold or traded at high prices, Diva has been known to be given away for free. Sadly, most of the frogs in Animal Crossing are the cause of debate as some believe the designs are interesting and others find them disgusting.

Barold the Lazy Cub

Barold from Animal Crossing

Cursed may not be a powerful enough word to describe Barold the cub's horrible design. He's been openly disliked for several years now on multiple grounds. While there are some who claim he's their favorite villager, others claim he resembles a racist stereotype. Additionally, his off-putting home appears to be a surveillance center, which could allude to the idea that he's constantly watching someone or something. This is some creepy behavior.

Hazel the Sisterly Squirrel

Hazel from Animal Crossing

Hazel is one of 22 squirrels in Animal Crossing. She has fairly regular attire and most of her facial features are appealing. Her small eyes, blushing cheeks, and bucktooth all seem normal. It's regrettable that there's a single reason she's even on this list: her atrocious unibrow. Hazel was nearly perfect and yet, the designers thought she needed a thick line of eyebrow hair across her forehead. The reasons for why this was needed are still unknown.

If future Animal Crossing games come out, it's likely Nintendo will introduce more villagers. This company is obviously comfortable experimenting with looks, so this list could be expanded one day. Still, there will be always people who love a character, so these cursed animals can still find a loving home.
