The first wave of Nintendo's amiibo was released in November 2014, with the Super Smash Bros. series of figures being the first to be available. The first wave of these figures was released alongside Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, which included Isabelle - Winter Outfit and Digby included with copies of the game. Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival requires players to scan an amiibo figure using the Wii U gamepad when rolling the dice for their turn, meaning these figures were a necessary part of the gameplay experience. Alongside the two figures that were packed in with the game, this initial wave also included Animal Crossing's K.K. Slider, Tom Nook, Mabel, Reese, Cyrus, and Lottie, who were compatible with the title.

Other games that support these amiibo figures include Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, players can scan one of these figures to unlock the ability to design a home for them. For the mainline titles Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, these figures unlock features like inviting a character to park their RV in the player's campground in New Leaf, and creating special photo shoots alongside making their poster available for purchase at Photopia in New Horizons.

Animal Crossing Amiibo Cards

A total of 509 Animal Crossing amiibo cards have been released across four waves, including villagers, special characters, and a set of cards based on Sanrio characters. Cards can be obtained by purchasing packs containing six cards from that set, meaning players can't directly obtain the specific cards they want without purchasing from a third-party reseller. These cards were originally designed for compatibility with Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, unlocking the ability to design a home for whichever villager's card was scanned.

Like the figures, these amiibo cards also have functionality with other Animal Crossing titles, such as Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, cards can be used to play mini-games like amiibo Card Battle and Resetti Bop, and the game comes with cards for Goldie, Rosie, and Stitches. Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Animal Crossing: New Horizons allow players to scan their amiibo cards to invite the card's villager to move into their town if they have an open spot available.
