An Among Us TV show is in the works at CBS studios that will be animated by the same studio as Star Trek: Lower Decks.
The Among Us TV show could join a long list of video game adaptations that have finally been seeing success recently. The '90s and 2000s had several video game adaptations, and most of them did poorly at the box office and were poorly reviewed by fans and critics. It wasn’t until recently that films like Sonic and The Super Mario Bros. Movie or streaming series such as The Last of Us and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners that video game adaptations received financial and critical success.
Variety reports CBS Studios is producing an animated based on the Among Us video game. The studio will work with the creators of the hit game at Innersloth to develop the series. The show will follow the main aspect of the game. The logline reads, “Members of your crew have been replaced by an alien shapeshifter intent on causing confusion, sabotaging the ship, and killing everyone. Root out the ‘Impostor’ or fall victim to its murderous designs.”
The executive producer of the Among Us series will be Owen Dennis, who created the Cartoon Network/Max series Infinity Train, which currently has 4 seasons. Dennis also worked on the hit Cartoon Network series Regular Show. Further, the animation studio Titmouse, known for shows like Big Mouth and Star Trek: Lower Decks, will work on the series. There are no other details about the show's plot or where it will be available. Conversations about which platform the show will air on are still ongoing.
Among Us, released in 2018, exploded in popularity in 2020. Most of that was due to the pandemic, as everyone was stuck inside, craving human interaction. The best way to do that was to get in a game with your friends and lie to each other about the imposter's identity. Since then, the franchise has added more maps, different game modes, and even an Among Us VR game.
It will be interesting to see which direction the Among Us series goes. It is doubtful that it will be as grounded and intense as The Last of Us. Hopefully, they can make it into a fun mystery show where the audience can try and figure out who the imposter is. It will most likely be a fun show directed at a younger audience. However, based on the work of its executive producers and animation studio, there could also be some adult humor on par with Star Trek: Lower Decks.
