There was a time when nobody even knew what Among Us was. But thanks to the sudden boom in popularity last year, it's without a doubt one of the most played multiplayer games at the moment, much to developer InnerSloth's delight.
However, the unexpected popularity means InnerSloth is having to do a lot of readjusting. And while it intends to continue supporting Among Us throughout 2021, fans will need to exercise patience when it comes to updates.
An update posted on Innersloth's website explains that the team not only had to switch back into working on the game after thinking it was over (after all, it did release in 2018 and InnerSloth was working on a sequel before deciding to cancel it) but also needed a new set-up so that they could more sustainably work on it. Two months were spent on restructuring and other behind-the-scenes work meant that they had to spend some time away on the game. Though this has resulted in slower updates, this streamlining effort should pay-off in the long-term and make development easier for the team.
Currently, the next major update is the new Airship map, which was announced at last year's Game Awards. There's no exact release date but Innersloth is aiming to have it out in early 2021, so fans can most likely expect it within the next few months or so. Innersloth is also working on to adding accounts to the game and while it had hoped to have this feature ready sooner, it is close to implementing it.
At some point, Innersloth intends on releasing a public roadmap, so it can be more transparent about future updates. While it will include new features and the like and the order they're expected to release, Innersloth says that it won't provide dates for new additions unless it's certain that it can meet them.
As a reminder, Among Us also recently made the jump to consoles with a Nintendo Switch port. It's already proven to be popular, as it entered the eShop's best-sellers list. Currently, cosmetics aren't available in the Switch version but InnerSloth assures that it is working on that too.
PC owners can also choose to download the game via the Epic Games Store or through Xbox Game Pass. It's not available on Xbox consoles, but that's another aim for 2021. Unfortunately, there's no word on whether the game will make the jump to the PlayStation 4 and/or PlayStation 5.
Among Us is currently available on Mobile, PC, and Switch, with Xbox One and Xbox Series X versions coming in 2021.
