Amnesia: Rebirth, the newly-announced sequel to the survival horror sensation Amnesia: The Dark Descent, will cast players into a terror-filled Algerian desert later this year. While the baseline Amnesia: Rebirth experience is what many players will seek immediately upon the game's release, some fans may ultimately prefer to adjust the title's difficulty. Fortunately, it may be possible to do exactly that, as Frictional Games is currently thinking about giving Rebirth a safe and hard mode.
Speaking with IGN, Frictional Games Co-Founder Thomas Grip recently indicated that the developer is indeed considering both a safe and hard mode for Amnesia: Rebirth. While this statement can certainly not be taken as definitive confirmation that either of these alternative difficulty settings, or both, will appear in Rebirth, some players will simply be happy to hear that Frictional is open to the idea.
For the uninitiated, safe modes typically look to eliminate a game's primary dangers, allowing players to explore a title's story and setting without fear of failure. Back in 2017, Frictional added a safe mode to SOMA, its underwater horror game from 2015, which altered the way that the game's monsters respond to a player's actions. As such, it is not be extremely surprising to hear that the developer is considering a safe mode for Amnesia: Rebirth.
On the flip side, hard modes increase the challenges that a game presents, and Frictional Games also has a track record of including this option in its titles. More specifically, the developer released a hard mode for Amnesia: The Dark Descent in 2018, which, among other things, made saving more difficult. While the particulars of Amnesia: Rebirth may not make it possible to implement an identical hard mode, it is possible that Dark Descent's offering will act as a foundation.
As fans wait for confirmation on the inclusion of a safe or hard mode, they can enjoy the Amnesia: Rebirth announcement trailer that was shared just this morning. Indeed, this trailer lays a nice foundation for what players will encounter in the forthcoming sequel, and it makes one thing perfectly clear: there is something truly horrifying happening in the desert of Algeria.
