Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs is a signature horror title from Frictional Games which utilizes symbolic survival horror to unnerve and horrify players. To update the Amnesia horror series, developers decided to remove the player's inventory, adding more difficulty to exploration and puzzle-solving.

The player character can only use flames and lanterns as light sources, which makes it easy to get jumpscares in the dark while missing important items. This guide outlines one of Amnesia's most infamous environmental puzzles: moving the truck during the alley chapter.

Exploring the London Alley

The three prior chapters are made up of claustrophobic corridors while the player character Mandus tries to avoid being attacked by pig-human hybrids. Partway through Chapter 4 (The Collar, The Neck, The Noose), the player will guide Mandus out of the mansion and to the street outside.

Despite the unsettling ambience, players actually are at little risk from being attacked by man-pigs during this section as the game is offering the challenge of an exploration puzzle. In order to progress, Mandus will need to find a way to move the large truck obstructing the church graveyard down the street.

Amnesia Truck Fuelling Station

The puzzle solution is a simple fetch quest: fill the truck with gasoline. The presence of a nearby truck fueling station (shown above) serves as a good indicator for what players need to do, but this supposedly easy moment can cause problems.

It is recommended that players save their game as soon as they get out onto the streets. This is to prevent any nasty glitches occurring, such as dropping the gasoline canister into an unreachable place, or the game code not recognizing the truck movements.

Finding the Gasoline Container

The focus is on Mandus finding a container to refill the truck, which is located further down the dark alley. Follow the lampposts towards the end; a brief auditory hallucination of a child's voice should trigger.

From this point, a cart should be on the side of the street, with a large wooden double door next to it. Entering here will yield a dark warehouse featuring part of Amnesia's machine.

The lantern may flicker here due to the presence of pigs being transported, but Mandus is safe from attack. Explore the far corners of the room to find the gasoline container; a journal message should appear when the player is close to the item, guiding Mandus towards picking it up.

Re-filling The Truck

Once Mandus has the container, it needs to be brought back to the truck fueling pump. Exit the warehouse and backtrack down the alley towards the previous building; there should be a tall metal doorway leading to the fueling station with boxes blocking the way.

Put down the container in a safe and visible place before pulling the boxes aside and opening the door. As mentioned above, it is possible for the box to glitch if mishandled, but the player should be able to enter and refill the container without issue.

Be aware of a sudden Wretch jumpscare as it breaks through a door upstairs after refilling the gasoline container. Mandus is in no danger from being attacked, but players should still remove the container and leave the warehouse as quickly as possible.

Refilling the truck in Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs

Head towards the truck again, where the player can now insert the gasoline container in the open hole towards the front of the truck. A collectible story note can also be found on the footstep of the truck as an optional story detail.

Once refilled, the player only needs to interact with the winding mechanism at the front of the truck (a hand icon will appear) and allow the pesky vehicle to roll back. The gate to the church graveyard will now be unobstructed, allowing Mandus to progress further on into Amnesia's terrifying story.

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs is available on Switch, PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
