Highlights

  • Amazon Prime Gaming is offering a variety of free games this August for subscribers, including popular titles like Payday 2 and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2.
  • Prime Gaming often releases games right before their sequels to give fans a chance to revisit or catch up on the franchise.
  • While Amazon Games has faced some challenges as a gaming publisher, its Prime Gaming division continues to provide quality titles, making it a publisher to watch out for in the future.

Amazon Prime gaming has revealed its list of eight titles that'll be available for subscribers to grab for free throughout the month of August. Each month, Amazon offers up a lineup of free games for its Prime Gaming subscribers to download and enjoy at no additional cost.

Recent months have seen popular games like Bethesda's Prey, Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition, and Shovel Knight: Showdown, among others, become free for subscribers to download and keep forever. Prime offerings sometimes even have a tendency to make a game available right before its new sequel is ready to release so that fans have a chance to revisit or catch up on the franchise beforehand. Last month's inclusion of Baldur's Gate 2 was an example of this, as the highly anticipated Baldur's Gate 3 is just days away from its PC launch on August 3.

Prime Gaming is doing this once again, as next month will see Payday 2, along with its Gage Mod Courier DLC, join the list of free games. This makes sense, as its long-awaited sequel Payday 3 is ready for a September 21 release. Also headlining the list is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2, following its predecessor being made available on July's free list. Also included in August's lineup are Farming Simulator 19, Foretales, Blade Assault, In Sound Mind, Driftland: The Magic Revival, and Summertime Madness. Additionally, subscribers will be able to claim free content in Overwatch 2, Dead by Daylight, Call of Duty: Warzone, Black Desert Online, Fall Guys, Pokemon Go, Warframe, and Shadow Fight 3.

Many gamers would agree that Star Wars games are currently experiencing a bit of a renaissance at the moment with Respawn Entertainment releasing Star Wars Jedi: Survivor earlier this year to critical praise, despite some early technical issues, and Ubisoft unveiling an impressive ten-minute gameplay reveal for next year's Star Wars Outlaws at Summer Game Fest. As such, some think it may be the right time for the beloved Force Unleashed duology to receive a much-deserved revival, either in the form of a sequel, remake, or reboot. With both third-person action titles headlining Prime Gaming this summer, perhaps Lucasfilm Games may have something planned for Starkiller fans down the road, but this is merely speculation.

As Amazon Games figures out its role as a major gaming publisher, having recently canceled a free-to-play multiplayer shooter called Crucible and a Lord of the Rings MMO, its Prime Gaming division seems to be continuing to deliver some quality titles for its subscribers to enjoy for free each month. With projects like Bandai Namco's Blue Protocol, a Tomb Raider game, and another Lord of the Rings MMORPG in the works at Amazon Games, perhaps it'll become a publisher to watch out for in the future.
