Ever since 2013's Aliens: Colonial Marines, the video games industry has been a little wary about adapting the Alien franchise. However, 2014's Alien Isolation showed that it was possible to do the movie franchise some justice and lovingly transcribe its universe onto PCs and consoles. Then there's Aliens: Fireteam, a new game being developed by Cold Iron Studios which was announced earlier this year. A recent update indicates that it may be coming out this summer.

In a recent report, the publisher for the game in Europe and Asia/Pacific, Focus Home Interactive, has said that there is now a general idea about when Aliens: Fireteam will actually be out. While there isn't an exact date yet, summer 2021 seems to be the expected release for it. However, for those who live outside the aforementioned areas, this could be a slightly more ambiguous date with estimates saying it could be out in the southern parts of the world anytime up to September.

The game itself will be the first Alien game to be released since Alien: Blackout which came out for mobile devices in 2019. Fireteam is a co-op action-shooter, perhaps not too dissimilar to the disastrous Colonial Marines. However, with games such as Back 4 Blood currently gaining hype, and with a release date expected for this one to be October, the high-octane Alien title could arguably be what the franchise needs to help make a positive impact on the co-operative action genre.

Compared to the highly-successful Alien Isolation, Fireteam will have much more fast-paced gameplay rather than the much slower, much more terrifying experience that the former was. While Isolation was a fan favorite amongst horror fans, Cold Iron Studios' efforts may have a lot to prove in order to win back the action fans. Earlier this year, a 25-minute video of Aliens: Fireteam play footage was shown to give gamers a chance to see it in action. The video can be watched above.

Aliens: Colonial Marines has gone down as one of the worst Alien games ever, which means Fireteam has a chance to show people what an action-based game based on the Ridley Scott universe should be like. Whether it will undo the damage done by Gearbox all those years ago remains to be seen, but online co-operative games are very much in vogue at the moment, so there's hope that it will be a much better payoff than 2013's efforts.

Aliens: Fireteam is scheduled to release on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X this summer.
