Achievements (or Trophies on PlayStation platforms) have become commonplace since they first made their debut on the Xbox 360. While many players do not care for achievements/trophies, just as many players go out of their way to get every single achievement or trophy in a game. Obtaining achievements/trophies will vary in difficulty across all games, and in some cases, players will not have to 100% the game to get every achievement.
Alan Wake 2 is a fairly easy game to get all the achievements/trophies in, especially since there are no achievements associated with difficulty. That said, there are plenty of collectibles that are easy to miss that will result in needing to do another playthrough. There are 66 achievements (or 67 for PlayStation because of the platinum trophy) in total for Alan Wake 2, and here is how to get them.
Updated June 9, 2024 by Paul Woodward: With the release of the first DLC for Alan Wake 2, there are 12 new achievements/trophies for players to unlock. While it won't take a lot of time for players to unlock them all, Night Springs is certainly a DLC that longtime fans of the Alan Wake series will enjoy. When Lake House is released, the achievements/trophies part of that DLC will be added as well.
Alan Wake 2: How Long to Beat
For those wondering, this is about how long it takes to beat Remedy Entertainment's survival-horror game Alan Wake 2.
All Achievements/Trophies in Alan Wake 2
Achievement/Trophy Name | How to Unlock |
Escape its Gravity | If players happen to get grabbed by an enemy, they can escape by using a Hand Flare if they have one in their inventory. There will be a button prompt on the screen to use the Hand Flare. |
This is the Moment | While dodging attacks is fairly easy, the tricky part of this achievement/trophy is that it has to be done at the last possible second. If done correctly, time will (briefly) slow down and the achievement/trophy will unlock. |
Not the Last | Unlocks upon picking up the first page of the manuscript. Since this story, it cannot be missed. |
Shining in the Night | When enemies are approaching, activate a Hand Flare. Not only will they move away from players, but this will also unlock the achievement/trophy. |
Secret Stashes | Unlocked by simply opening one Cult Stash and one Lunch Box. Both of these items can be found all over the place, especially if players take time to explore every corner of the map. These only appear in Saga's chapters. |
Finding a Way | This is unlocked during Return 3: Local Girl. Since finding the screwdriver is a mandatory objective, this cannot be missed. |
Cut Short | Unlocked as part of the story during Return 5: Old Gods. Since the Boltcutters are needed to advance the story, this cannot be missed either. |
Chase the Source | When the darkness shield is burned away on a Taken, there will be a glowing red point somewhere on their body. Shooting this not only causes massive damage to the enemy but also unlocks this achievement/trophy. |
Darkness Coiled | All players have to do to unlock this is focus the flashlight on an enemy to remove their shield. |
Strange Reality | Throughout Saga's chapters, players will encounter dolls that can be picked up and placed on diagrams. There will be a paper nearby that gives a hint for what dolls go where. If done correctly, a Charm will spawn nearby. Players need to solve five of these puzzles to unlock this achievement/trophy. |
The Koskela Brothers | In order to unlock this, players will need to watch every single TV commercial in Saga's chapters. |
The Trail of the Writer | Just like the achievement/trophy above, this one can be unlocked by watching every TV scene that occurs during Alan's chapters. |
Bring It | This can be unlocked by obtaining the Sawed-Off Shotgun in Return 2: The Heart. |
Ready for a Fight | Unlocked by acquiring the Hunting Rifle in Return 5: Old Gods. |
Greatest Hits | Unlocked in Return 3: Local Girl by obtaining the Crossbow from a Cult Stash. |
Stop Right There | This achievement/trophy can be unlocked by acquiring the Pump-Action Shotgun in Return 6: Scratch. |
Find the Light | Unlocked as part of the story between Initiation 1: Late Night and Initiation 2: Casey. |

Yippee Ki-yay | Can be unlocked by finding and acquiring the Double-Barrelled Shotgun in the Oceanview Hotel bar. Once in the bar, use the Angel Lamp. |
Aimed Ahead | Kill five enemies with headshots. Progress is saved, so players do not need to kill five enemies at once. |
Coffee Thermos | This cannot be missed, as unlocking a save point room story. |
Felt Good | Use any healing item. It doesn't matter what kind. |
Lawman | Defeat Nightingale, the boss of Return 2: The Heart. |
Bright Falls' Finest | Defeat both Mulligan and Thornton during Return 3: Local Girl. |
Girl in Love | Defeat Cynthia in Return 5: Old Gods. |
Filled with Rage | Defeat Scratch in Return 6: Scratch. |
Storm Cloud | Successfully escape from the Dark Presence during Initiation 2: Casey. This is mandatory, so it cannot be missed. |
Stop the Monster | This is unlocked by focusing the flashlight on a Taken Thrower just before they are about to teleport. This variant of Taken teleports around a lot, so players will either have to get familiar with their attack and teleport patterns or unlock this through luck. |
Growing Stronger | Unlocked by upgrading one of Saga's weapons once. This is done by finding scattered manuscript fragments and spending them on upgrades in the Mind Place. |
All Smiles | Upgrade one of Saga's weapons completely, which means getting all the upgrades that are available for one weapon. The easiest way to unlock this is to focus on one weapon to upgrade, especially since there won't be enough scattered manuscript fragments to upgrade every weapon. |
Carry his Words | Find and unlock one Word of Power while in the Dark Place. While these are easily missable, players only need to find one to unlock the achievement/trophy. |
Nightmare Territory | Pick up any map that is found throughout the game. The location of one is called out to players during Return 1: Invitation. |
