Highlights

  • Alan Wake 2 features eight weapons, including the Crossbow, Revolver, and Pistol.
  • Upgrades for the weapons can be obtained depending on the character, such as increasing ammo capacity.
  • The Flare Gun is considered the best weapon in the game, combining the stopping power of a shotgun with the illumination ability of a flashlight.

Alan Wake 2 does not have a lot of weapons. Those who played the first game will probably be familiar with a good chunk of them. Unlike other horror game series like Resident Evil that give names to their specific weapon types, Alan Wake 2 is satisfied with generic titles like Revolver and Double-barreled Shotgun.

Alan Wake 2: How Long to Beat

For those wondering, this is about how long it takes to beat Remedy Entertainment's survival-horror game Alan Wake 2.

There’s nothing wrong with that approach but it is different. Now, naming topics aside, Alan Wake 2 has eight total weapons in it and they can be upgraded in different ways depending on the character. Saga can get five while Alan can only find three. Of those eight, here is how they all stack up.

8 Crossbow

Obtained For Saga In Return 3: Local Girl

The Crossbow is easily the worst weapon in Alan Wake 2 when they obtain from a cult stash in the woods because it is cumbersome to use. Players can initially only load one arrow into it at a time although this can be increased to two via Saga’s weapon upgrade path. Even with that upgrade, the reload speed is slow, putting Saga in a vulnerable state often. The Crossbow does have its perks like being able to retrieve arrows if players miss their target. Players would assuredly love this feature for bullets in other guns too but that seems too wild even for a horror game like Alan Wake 2.

7 Revolver

Obtained For Alan In Initiation 2: Casey

The Revolver is Alan’s starting weapon in his second chapter of Alan Wake 2. It can fire six shots before it needs to be reloaded and doing so can be kind of satisfying. Players can pretend to be Revolver Ocelot from the Metal Gear series who often talked about the thrill of reloading revolvers in battle. Fantasies aside, Alan’s Revolver is a decently effective weapon against the armies of darkness although it is also nothing special. It does have some decent upgrades via Alan’s Words of Power like an ability to not spend ammo on shots fired although the chances of this are rare.

6 Pistol

Obtained For Saga In Return 1: Invitation

Shooting enemies with the Pistol in Alan Wake 2

The Pistol is in turn Saga’s standardized weapon at the start of chapter one in Alan Wake 2. She is an FBI Agent after all so it only seems fitting for her to have a gun unlike Alan who is a writer by trade. It has less stopping power than the Revolver, but its larger ammo capacity makes it just slightly better.

Also, if players get good at headshots and hitting the red exposed targets on enemies, then the small rounds of the gun will be efficient enough. Saga can get an upgrade for the Pistol that will increase the clip size from twelve to eighteen, making it even more valuable.

5 Sawed-off Shotgun

Obtained For Saga In Return 2: The Heart

Players can get the Sawed-off Shotgun for Saga fairly early in Alan Wake 2. All players have to do is solve a small lottery-based puzzle in the general store to unlock its case. This weapon packs a punch which is not strange considering shotguns tend to be OP in survival horror games. The only downside is that it only holds two rounds, meaning that players will have to reload a lot. Thankfully, Saga can at least get an upgrade to help with the slow reload time.

4 Double-Barreled Shotgun

Obtained For Alan In Initiation 5: Room 665

The Double-Barreled Shotgun is Alan’s shotgun equivalent and unlike the Revolver to Pistol discussion, Alan gets the better weapon here although there is a caveat. It can be acquired atop the Oceanview Hotel while players try to solve a cocktail-based puzzle later in the game. His weapon also has a two-ammo chamber limit and he cannot upgrade the weapon to reload faster. He can, however, increase the impact and damage while attacking multiple enemies. That’s what shotguns are good for in horror games and action games overall: crowd control.

3 Hunting Rifle

Obtained For Saga In Return 5: Old Gods

Players can make a strong case for the Hunting Rifle being the best weapon in the game once they acquire it in the nursing home. It certainly has the stopping power that makes it an attractive weapon for Saga. Also, an upgrade can help it penetrate through an enemy’s dark shield, allowing players to save their flashlight batteries.

The chamber is even bigger than both of the shotguns so far. However, it can be slow to use because players have to aim it and it is a two-harder for Saga. Players can certainly train themselves to get better at handling it though and become a sniping hero in Alan Wake 2.

2 Pump-Action Shotgun

Obtained For Saga In Return 6: Scratch

Alan technically has the better two-ammo shotgun, but there is a better one in the game. The Pump-Action Shotgun is the last weapon Saga will acquire, which is in the police station, and it blows the other two shotguns out of the water. It is stronger than the other shotguns, although the power is not that much higher. The best thing about it is the chamber size though as it can carry six rounds. It may not be the best weapon overall in the game, but that’s only because the finale is exclusive to Alan.

1 Flare Gun

Obtained For Alan In Initiation 4: We Sing

Shooting enemies with the Flare Gun in Alan Wake 2

The Flare Gun is without a doubt the best gun in the game for a myriad of reasons. It has the stopping power of a shotgun along with the illumination ability of a flashlight. It can only house one round at a time, but that can sometimes be more than enough to stop a horde. Also, the reload is not that big of a deal. It’s also tied to the best mission in Alan Wake 2 during We Sing chapter for Alan which involves an elaborate musical number. The only downside to the Flare Gun is that Saga doesn’t get one.
