Amazon Studios announced that Reacher, which originally started developing in July 2019, has been picked up for a second season. The renewal news comes merely a few days after it debuted on February 4.

The Amazon Prime series —based on the best-selling crime novels by Lee Child— follows retired police officer Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) as he finds himself caught in a dangerous conspiracy filled with corrupt politicians, businessmen, and cops after being wrongfully arrested for murder. Armed with nothing but his wits and determined to prove his innocence, Jack sets off to uncover the dark truth behind his arrest.

Reacher was released all at once and proved to be one of Prime Video's top five series launches to date. Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke stated that the successful debut of the show "is a testament to Lee Child’s creation of one of entertainment’s most well-known heroes, [showrunner] Nick Santora’s original approach to the storytelling, Alan’s brilliant embodiment of the character, and the dedication of the talented people who worked tirelessly in front of and behind the camera to make such an undeniably bingeworthy series." She added that the streamer is eager to bring fans a new season of Reacher.

While it remains unclear exactly when season 2 is scheduled for release, Child and Santora seem to be happy with Reacher's reception. "Partnering with Amazon Studios for season one of Reacher was a total delight — they had our backs every step of the way, and it really shows, in every line and every frame", the author said in a joint statement with Santora. "So I’m thrilled we’ll be working together again, for season two."

The shows' first season is based on the first installment in Child's series, titled Killing Floor, which was first published in 1997. Reacher is produced by Amazon Studios, Skydance Television, and Paramount Television Studios. Skydance and Paramount had previously produced two Jack Reacher feature films starring Tom Cruise — a role that could have gone to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, though he ultimately didn't get cast.

In addition to Ritchson —known for his work in Smallville and HBO Max's TitansReacher stars Malcolm Goodwin, Willa Fitzgerald, Chris Webster, and Hugh Thompson. The rest of the cast includes Maria Sten, Harvey Guillén, Kristin Kreuk, Currie Graham, Marc Bendavid, Willie C. Carpenter, Maxwell Jenkins, and Bruce McGill. Child and Santora serve as executive producers alongside Don Granger, Scott Sullivan, Dana Goldberg, and Bill Bost.

Reacher season 1 is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
