Over the last couple of years, Akko has been making waves in the mechanical keyboard space. Even though they are not at the same level as companies like Logitech or Razer, with releases like the MOD007B-PC, they are starting to become a fan favorite for gamers wanting a mechanical keyboard that doesn't cut corners and is also quite affordable.

One of the main selling points of this keyboard is the use of Hall effect magnetic switches. These switches are not on many keyboards; currently, the only other ones that come to mind that use these types of switches are the SteelSeries Apex Pro and Wooting 60HE. So even though Akko is still relatively unknown, the MOD007B-PC joins an elite group of keyboards that can easily find its way onto many gamer's setups.

Over the last week, Game ZXC has had the pleasure of trying out and testing the Akko MOD007B-PC. Whether it was for work, typing up articles, or gaming, this keyboard has been a daily driver and test after test; this keyboard has been thoroughly impressive. Plus, it doesn't look half bad either.

Unboxing and Setup

The tools provided with the Akko MOD007B PC Santorini Keyboard

Compared to most other keyboards on the market, the unboxing and setup process for this keyboard felt incredibly premium. The only hiccup during the setup process was not being able to find the on/off switch. For some reason, it is hidden underneath the caps lock button. Gamers with thicker fingers might have difficulty flipping the switch, but the switch puller was quite useful for it. After discovering that, the rest of the setup was a breeze.

The Akko software will automatically update the keyboard to the newest firmware and walk users through the calibration process to set up the adjustable actuation points.

Design and Features

The Akko MOD007B-PC doesn't fall into the trap of looking like all the other keyboards out there, especially in this Santorini colorway. While the font of the keycaps is not going to be to everyone's liking, it did give this keyboard a DIY feel out of the box, and the print quality on these keycaps is phenomenal. Even the specialty keycaps for the spacebar left and right shift, esc, and return are clear and gorgeous. The image on the return key, in particular, kept drawing the team in over the week.

People looking for a 75% keyboard should definitely consider the MOD007B-PC. The layout is not revolutionary compared to other 75% keyboards, but it instantly feels comfortable to type on, and there was very little adjustment time moving over from my usual keyboard, the Lofree Flow.

Features

Underneath the surface, the MOD007B-PC gets even more exciting. As previously mentioned, this keyboard uses Hall effect magnetic switches, which allow users to define a custom actuation point. These switches are well worth the price of admission alone, although they are only currently available as a linear switch. If gamers don't want to use these switches, the PCB is entirely hot-swappable, so the Hall effect switches can easily be swapped out for a different set.

This keyboard also features three connection options: wired, 2.4 GHz wireless, and Bluetooth. All three of these connection options perform excellently, so whatever form gamers decide to use, they will not be disappointed with the performance. Just be sure not to leave the wireless USB dongle in the box because it is pretty easy to lose in the accessory box with how small it is.

Comfort

The MOD007B-PC is not the most ergonomic keyboard out there, but it is also not uncomfortable to use for long periods. While the thicker case does provide an excellent stable base for this keyboard, it does make it hard to find a natural resting position with this keyboard. When typing, the heel of a user's hand could accidentally press the Windows or Alt key, and the next keystroke, which would open a shortcut. This is a pasticular issue for users with thicker fingers.

With gamers spending most of their free time and probably working hours using a keyboard, it is worth looking at an ergonomic keyboard.

Thankfully, there are adjustable feet, which allows for some customization of the typing angle to combat the thicker case. However, the highest option did create a lot of pronation, which is when the wrists are flexed up. This can easily lead to wrist strain or RSI, which no one wants.

For gamers with smaller hands, Game ZXC recommends using the lower feet or no adjustable feet at all, and gamers with larger hands might feel comfortable using the taller feet. Just be careful it doesn't create strain while typing.

Performance

While the comfort of the MOD007B-PC left some to be desired, it more than makes up for it when it comes to performance. Using this keyboard over the last week, whether for work or gaming, was an absolute blast. The linear magnetic switches on this keyboard are pretty magical and make this keyboard an excellent option for both gaming and working, unlike more gaming-focused keyboards like the MSI GK50 Elite TKL.

While working, the MOD007B-PC was typically set to comfort mode with 2mm travel. This allowed for a light-responsive typing experience without being too light, where a brush of the keys led to typos. Even though the actuation force of these switches is only 45 grams, comfort mode made them feel a bit heavier, which was quite nice for typing and general work.

When it came to gaming, the keyboard was either in Sensitive or Game mode. Both these modes set the actuation point to 0.5 mm, which is incredibly short. This minuscule travel distance allowed the team here to make very quick reflex movements in the heat of battle.

A week of testing barely scratched the surface of the possibilities that the custom actuation points deliver. But for gamers who decide to pick the MOD007B-PC up, the amount of control and customization these allow is terrific. Don't be afraid to dive into the Akko software and see what can be done with some tinkering.

Overall Thoughts

The Akko MOD007B-PC is a surprise favorite, with many reviewers singing its praises, and after spending a week with this keyboard, it is understandable why. The MOD007B-PC delivers a fantastic performance, an excellent typing experience, and a look that defies the norm of mechanical keyboards. Plus, compared to other keyboards that offer Hall effect switches, the MOD007B-PC is on the more affordable side.

The only thing that would make the MOD007B-PC perfect is a wristrest. If Akko comes out with a wristrest that continues the Greek island theme or cherry blossom theme on the Tokyo colorway, this is easily one of the best keyboards of 2024. Even without the wristrest, it is pretty high up there.

Even though the Akko MOD007B-PC is a fantastic keyboard, it is not for everyone. So, gamers looking for keyboards that offer similar performance or form factor, be sure to check out these other keyboards that might be a better fit.

FAQ

Q: What is Hall effect keyboard switch?

Hall effect switches, sometimes called magnetic switches, use Hall sensors to determine the distance a key is pressed. So, unlike a typical keyboard, which activates a key when it hits the end of its travel, hall effect switches can be actuated throughout their travel. This can be used to have multiple key presses for using one key or using a keyboard more like the analog sticks on a controller.

Q: Is Akko a good brand for keyboards?

While Akko doesn't have the same reputation and name recognition as other brands like Razer and Logitech, they are one of the best brands for gamers wanting an excellent keyboard that doesn't cut corners and is still a pretty reasonable price.
